A great way to replace missing teeth and provide a permanent solution to having removable partial or complete dentures is dental implants. They provide excellent support and stability for these types of dental appliances.

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth, typically titanium, that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone by a dentist or periodontist (a specialist of the gums and supporting bone). The teeth attached to implants are very natural looking which enhances or restores a patient’s smile. Dental implants are not only aesthetically pleasing but are strong and durable. On occasion, there maya be a need to re-tighten or replace dental implants due to normal wear but generally they last many years.

Reasons for dental implants:

What does getting dental implants involve?

The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months.

X-rays and impressions (or molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone. This portion of the treatment will require up to six months of healing. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be necessary in order to place the post which holds the artificial tooth in place. With other implants, the post and anchor are attached to each other and placed at the same time. This process requires a few visits over several months.

After several weeks of healing, the artificial teeth are made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. Because multiple fittings may be required, this step may take one or two months to complete. Once healing is complete, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing you excellent stability and comfort.

You will be given care instructions when your treatment is completed. Proper oral hygiene habits, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will support the longevity of your new implant.
